War Sisters
In 1942, in Nazi-occupied Yugoslavia, Zejneba, a young mother living a quiet life, learns that the Nazis are about to deport her Jewish friend Rebecca to an unknown place in Poland called Auschwitz.
As Zejneba grapples with this news, she watches from her window as the Nazis establish the Gestapo headquarters across the street in Sarajevo. She sees it all—the torture of resistance members, the harrowing screams, and the chilling gunshots. Desperate to protect Rebecca, she vows to help. But how?
Soon, Zejneba is caught in a web of deceit, where every lie could cost lives—including those of her elderly father, her loving husband, and her newborn baby—all endangered by her daring actions. Though she does not know it yet, one of them will pay with their life for her actions to save her friend Rebecca.
Based on the true story of Zejneba Hardaga, whose wartime heroism earned her the title of Righteous Among the Nations, War Sisters is a novel about the enduring power of friendship amid history’s darkest hour.
