Love in Berlin

BASED ON A REMARKABLE TRUE LOVE STORY, documented by the Washington Holocaust Memorial Museum, Berlin, 1939.

In a city ruled by hatred, two teenagers from opposing worlds are pitted against each other.Gerhard, a patriotic 16-year-old Christian, is an Aryan poster child who excels in sports and proudly salutes Heil Hitler. But when Nazis unearth Gerhard's father's Jewish bloodline, Gerhard is branded as a half-breed, a mischling, and is expelled from school. With nowhere else to go, he joins the only place in Berlin that would take him—the small Jewish youth group, where he meets Meir.

17-year-old Meir’s life has been increasingly precarious since the rise of the Nazi Party. The Jewish youth group is all Meir has left. Meir is usually friendly to everyone who joins, but there’s something about this new kid… Gerhard doesn’t know a single Hebrew prayer, and in fact, does not seem Jewish at all. Suspicious, Meir concludes that Gerhard must be a Nazi spy sent to infiltrate and ruin the Jewish youth movement. Over Meir’s dead body.

Right from the start, the two despise each other. But when bombs begin to drop in Berlin, Gerhard and Meir are partnered in a nightly air raid patrol and forced to cooperate and spend long nights together… alone. As they slowly get to know each other, their animosity slowly turns into a tentative friendship, and then into something more.

When deportations to Auschwitz begin to decimate the Jewish community, Gerhard and Meir are forced to make impossible decisions. Will they be able to save one another? At what cost?

Based on the real lives of Gerhard Beck and Meir Lewin, this novel includes the couple's authentic writings, illustrations, poetry, and rare historic photographs. Uncovering this little known piece of history, Love in Berlin is a haunting reminder of love's power to resist and shine even in history's darkest hour. How far would you go to save the one you love?
